THE KIWANIS COMMUNITY PARADE June 16, 2007 “Mardi Gras In June”
The Kiwanis Club of St. Helens, Kiwanis Community Parade will be held on Saturday June 16th. Over the past few years the parade has grown to over 100 separate entries. The number of persons associated with each entry ranges from only one individual to as many as twenty. So as you can see there is literally a cast of thousands. We have been unable to find an exclusive sponsor for the parade this year so we are looking for companies or individuals to sponsor one of five awards or banners in the parade. So far Pacific Stainless and The St. Helens Credit Union have agreed to sponsor an award. The sponsorship fee for this purpose is $500. Thank-you to Pacific Stainless and the St. Helens Credit Union for their support of the Kiwanis Scholarship Program.
The theme for this year’s parade is “Mardi Gras In June”. The traditional colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold. So we are looking for a lot of use of those colors in the best theme floats and are hoping that entries will provide beads in the spirit of the real Mardi Gras. Registration packets will be mailed around the middle of May. That’s right, if you have been a parade participant in either of the past two years you will be receiving your own invitation and registration form for this year’s parade in the mail. Pre-registration materials can also be found at sainthelesnkiwanis.org and will be available at the Chamber office after about the middle of May. You can also register the day of the parade.
Participation in the parade is free, however, you will be required to register and indicate that you have insurance for any motorized entry. If you want to distribute candy or beads during the parade you will be required to have walkers along with your entry to pass out any items you plan to give away. Throwing candy and beads from vehicles is prohibited due of safety concerns. The only other prohibition pertains to horse entries. Stallions are not allowed to participate in the parade. Horse entries (or groups of horse entries) are also required to provide their own pooper scoopers. There is a special category for pooper scoopers, so there is an opportunity for them to register as a separate entry and to compete for a ribbon.
Ribbons will be awarded for first, second, third and forth in each of 26 categories. Judging will be greatly influenced by depiction of the parade theme. There will also be trophies awarded for Sweepstakes, Mayor’s Trophy and the President’s Trophy. The Grand Marshal for the parade has not yet been named.
The registration table will open at 9:00 a.m. on parade day across from the Chamber office. Judging will begin at 11:00 a.m., so to be judged you must be registered and in your assigned place prior to 11:00. The parade will start at noon and will last until about 1:30 p.m.
Questions about the parade can be directed to Fergus Pilon by phone at 503-397-2929 or e-mail fergus4peace@comcast.net
