Ex-Stimson Worker finds new job: working for himself

Excerpts from The Chronicle Wednesday, April 25, 2007

When Stimson Lumber closed its mill in St Helens in 2006, Chris Singelstad found himself out of work.  Singelstad was a 16 year veteran of the mill, first working for Friesen Lumber Company before Stimson bought the mill. Like many others Singelstad didn’t relish the idea of finding another job out of the area and either moving away or commuting to work, so he pursued an idea he had been considering for some time. He bought a small business.

In Singelstads case that business was a carpet cleaning business. He purchased Naturalist Carpet Cleaning from its former owner, Larry Sutherlin, in December 2006. Sutherlin trained him for a month and then Singelstad was on his own.  He says he quickly found out many potential customers had a bad impression of a carpet cleaning business.  He has been working hard to show customers his process and service is reliable and cost effective. Naturalist, as the name implies, relies on natural cleaning ingredients. Singelstad claims there is no odor and his process is safe for the environment. It is also safe for people with allergies, he says.

Singelstad is seeing his business grow, he says. He recently purchased a new piece of equipment to cut drying time. “It helps me do my job better,” he says. He has also found that his job often requires working hours that are convenient for his customers. Singlestad eventually wants to expand his business and hire employees. He currently services Rainier, St Helens and Scappoose.   Chris Singelstad became a Chamber Member a few months ago and at one of our Koffee Klatsches we gave away a bottle of his special formula in our business card drawing.

South County Spotlight Purchased by Community Newspaper

Excerpts from South County Spotlight April 11, 2007

Co-publishers Art and Sally Heerwagen officially announced this week that The South County Spotlight is being purchased by Community Newspapers, a group of 16 weekly and monthly newspapers published in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties.

“We have enjoyed the past 12 years of reporting the news and participating in our community,” they said. “We couldn’t have made a better choice to have lived and published a newspaper. And, we couldn’t have made a better choice of our successors than Community Newspapers – The Spotlight is going to be in good hands.”

Community Newspapers and the Portland Tribune are part of Oregon Publications Corp., which is owned by Dr. Robert Pamplin Jr. and his wife Marilyn, who are longtime Lake Oswego residents, noted businesspeople and nationally honored philanthropists. The Pamplins also own AM 860 KPAM.

“We are very pleased that The Spotlight is joining our company of newspapers,” said Steve Clark, president of Community Newspapers and the Portland Tribune. “We are committed to publish great individual newspapers in each of the communities we serve”.

We also are committed to be great partners in the community through extensive volunteer engagement and community leadership.

“We greatly value the trust that Art and Sally are placing in us by selling their newspaper to Community Newspapers,” said Clark. “We applaud Art and Sally’s long history of great journalism in Oregon and Columbia County and their many community contributions. Art and Sally are remarkable people, Oregonians and journalist.  We will work hard to carry on and grow their great traditions and contributions”.

Fundraiser’s aim: to restore donated truck

Excerpts from the South County Spotlight April 18, 2007

Scappoose firefighters and volunteers are closing in on their fundraising goals to restore a recently donated ladder truck for use in the field.

In February, a fundraising event at the Varsity Grill generated $900 toward repainting the truck and outfitting accompanying ladders, including a 100 foot extension ladder, with needed safety features.

“That’s the main thing, is getting it painted to match the other vehicles,” said Cheryl Engstrom, the public information officer for the Scappoose Rural Fire Protection District.

The Portland Fire Department had donated the truck and ladders to the Scappoose district. Most of the ladders have already been upgraded and readied for use.

“The biggest thing was the ladders, and those have already been taken care of,” Engstrom said, adding that the ladders have received the necessary safety certifications.

A second fundraiser, an 18 hole four-man golf scramble at the St Helens Golf Course, is scheduled for June 9. All proceeds from the event will be used to restore the ladder truck.
