Consider an Internet Policy

It’s not clear how privacy and copyright laws apply to the Internet. So you should have a policy for your employees that covers:

· Monitoring e-mail. Even if you monitor rarely, have employees sign a statement that gives you that right.

· E-mail etiquette. Your policy should ban obscenity, tasteless jokes and threats-with penalties spelled out. You might also want to ban chain letters, sports pools or even personal correspondence.

· Confidentiality. Try to prevent e-mail errors that let sensitive materials leak outside the organization by requiring employees to label confidential information as such.

· Liability. E-mail makes it too easy to infringe on a copyright or to steal trade secrets. Head off that problem by stating specifically what employees may or may not commit to or buy on the Internet.

Ideas to Use When Delegating

Proper delegation creates a team spirit and helps you accomplish much more than if you try to work alone. Tips:

· Pick people who can accept responsibility. Surround yourself with the best.

· Try to match the person to the task. Try to delegate assignments that will capitalize on the person’s talents.

· Remember that the person performing the task may not do it as well as you do it. Don’t be tempted to take over the project. Weigh the time you might lose at first against the time you’ll save in the long run.

· Build the person’s confidence by assigning low-risk projects at first.

· Let delegates put their own spin on the assignment. Their way may be better. Be sure to listen to their ideas.

· When communicating a task, use words that are easily understood. A good idea: Dictate the instructions on a cassette or write them out so the person can recheck the message.

· Keep tabs on what you delegate. As the deadline nears, check to make sure that everything is on target. Give a due date for the assignment and explain how this assignment relates to other priorities.

Five Ways to Sell Your Ideas

Here are five ways to show the value of your ideas to others in your organization, according to researcher Everett M. Rogers:

· Relative advantage. To get your idea accepted, clearly show its advantages over other ideas. Examples: costs less or saves time and effort.

· Compatibility. Before you present your idea, answer this question: “Is the idea consistent with the values, experiences and needs of those I want to adopt it?”

· Complexity. The more complex your idea seems to others, the less the chance they’ll accept it. This may seem obvious, but if you overlook it, you’ll face a tough sell. So keep it simple.

· Trial ability. People like to test things-or at least see them in action-before they buy. Although it’s tough to test-drive an idea, you should seek ways for others to try it on a small scale.

· Observability. People can’t “see” ideas, so you must figure out a way to make your idea real to them. Suggestions: Get someone who has tried the idea to tell the group about it. Or, if possible, take them to where they can actually see the idea in action.
