LOCAL MERCHANTS JOIN TOGETHER TO SUPPORT “COFFEE FOR CAMP” FUNDRAISER

St. Helens, OR --March 13, 2007 –13 local espresso shops and cafés have teamed up together to support Columbia City School’s “Coffee For Camp” fundraiser.  Sixth-grade students in St. Helens will be selling “Coffee For Camp” cards for $10.00 starting March 8, 2007.   Kirstin Boynton, parent volunteer, stated, “100% of the proceeds from the sale of the “Coffee For Camp” cards will go towards sending every St. Helens sixth-grader to Outdoor Science School this May.”

These cards can be used at twelve local St. Helens espresso shops and cafés and one in Scappoose.  When the card is presented at participating merchants, you will save $.75 off any drink over $2.00.  These cards can be used for up to thirty visits.  The “Coffee For Camp” fundraiser is possible due to this generous community support from these local businesses.  Randi Perdue, owner of RJ’s Hot Shots stated, “We support our schools 100%.  We are happy to do anything that we can to help out, especially for something like this.”  Nearly every business that sells espresso in town is a supporter of this fundraiser.  The merchant list includes: Abella Caffeino, Express Lane Espresso (both Scappoose and St. Helens locations), Fresh Start Espresso (North and South shops), Geppetto’s Ice Cream and Deli, Grammy’s Used Books and Espresso, Houlton Bakery,  Kandi’s Koffee (St. Helens),  Lofted Lair Gallery and Espresso, Mr. Joe’s Coffee Café, RJ’s Hot Shots, and West Street Grocery Espresso.

Outdoor Science School is a four-day, three night camp, where students learn by doing.  The curriculum is based upon required state benchmarks in science, emphasized by hands on activities and experiments.  In addition, Outdoor Science School offers the students a unique opportunity to live together, building skills of cooperation and respect for one another and the environment.

The camp costs $168.00 per child.  Each family is asked to contribute $80.00, leaving the remaining $88.00 per child to be raised through fundraising efforts. Columbia City School is working hard to raise the additional $20,000 in funds needed to send St. Helens sixth graders to Outdoor Science School this May.  To purchase a “Coffee For Camp” card, contact Columbia City School at (503) 366-7550.

SENATE PASSES HISTORIC RAINY DAY FUND AGREEMENT

Legislation will establish savings account to be used during difficult economic times

SALEM- The Oregon Senate today passed House Bill 2707 and House Bill 2031, legislation that creates the state’s first-ever comprehensive rainy day fund. The new savings account will initially be funded by redirecting approximately $290 million from the corporate kicker into the fund. Additional deposits into the rainy day fund will come from the General Fund ending balance, with the next deposit forecast to be $138 million.

The rainy day fund can be accessed during difficult economic times to prevent cuts in education, health care and public safety. The legislation received strong support form the business community and passed with bipartisan support.

“This is an historic day for Oregon,” said Senate President Peter Courtney (D Salem/

Gervais/Woodburn). “The legislature has come together in a bipartisan way to make sure

Oregon will be okay during rough times.”

House Bill 2707 establishes a savings account that can be tapped if certain strict economic criteria are met. The legislature will also have to provide a three-fifths vote before the fund could be accessed. Additionally, the legislature could only draw on two-thirds of the fund in any one biennium.

“This is one of the most significant votes I have taken in my career,” said Senate Majority

Leader Kate Brown (D-Portland). “Oregon has waited far too long to implement this commonsense policy.”

The creation of the fund will also have a positive impact on the state’s bond rating, saving the state dollars due to an improved rating and lower interest rates. In addition, the legislation passed today preserves a $25 million tax credit for small businesses in Oregon.

“This is smart legislation that makes sense to everyone and means immediate savings of millions for the state,” said Senator Ryan Deckert (D-Beaverton). “Oregon will also benefit for years to come by the creation of this fund.”

House Bills 2707 and 2031 will now move to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

Scappoose Bay Kayaking Opening Another New Location in St Helens

“St Helens Outdoor Adventure”

Scappoose Bay Kayaking is adding another location to the area in the building behind where the St. Helens Cafe was located in Historic Riverfront St. Helens. Tentatively it will be called the "ST HELENS OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CENTER" and offer boating necessities for the dock visitors, very unique "ADVENTURE ISLAND TRIMARAN" sail/yaks, classes on sailing and the same water related inventory that the Paddling center now offers in the Scappoose Bay Marina.

"We want to be closer to the water for these unique sail trimarans and offer outdoor activities to the St. Helens river area." Steve Gibons said. We're thinking kite sales and rentals for Sand Island flyers, guided kayak tours from the river side to Ridgefield, Sauvie Island & Sand Island, Bag Ice for the boaters, Bait for the dock fisherman and some small snacks to munch on while walking the newly enegerized Old Town St. Helens area.  Should be great and hopefully open by June 1st.

Fisher and Irvin buy Brown’s Landing

Excerpts from The Chronicle March 14, 2007

Partners to keep name, specialize in boats and marine-related gear.  Mike Fiske and Kathy Irvin have recently purchased Brown’s Landing from longtime owner and manager Deborah McQueen. Both Fiske and Irvin are life long boating enthusiasts who recently moved to the area from Cottage Grove, a small town near Eugene. They share a background in business management and quality process operations.

Fiske and Irvin plan to call the store Brown’s Landing Marine, keeping the well known name while reflecting the focus of the business. They plan to specialize in boats and marine related gear and will retain the popular Livingston, G3 and Yamaha lines while adding Wellcraft boats to the company’s offerings.

Weldcraft is a line of welded aluminum fishing boats with models that range from 17 feet to the 26 foot Ocean King, Weldcraft’s top of the line offshore fisher.

Brown’s Landing Marine will continue to broker consignment boats and offer a full service and repair shop.

Brown’s Landing was established in 1958 on Multnomah Channel in Scappoose. The marina portion was sold in the late 1990’s and the boat sales ad service portion moved to its current 12,000 square foot building on Johnson Landing Road.
